Campsite in the Wellington region
Tucked away in Tararua Forest Park, this secluded campsite sits at the head of two spectacular gorges above the Waiohine River, not far from Carterton. It's a long-loved spot for rafting, canoeing, swimming, and outdoor education, with the river a brisk walk away and a striking suspended cable swing bridge that's a real highlight (and a thrill if you dislike heights). A short walk up the river leads to a pretty waterfall, with the water reaching about knee-deep at most—able shoes recommended. Tent sites are spaced far enough apart for good privacy, and even on busy summer nights you can usually tuck away into a quiet corner. Facilities include clean flushing toilets, fire pits (except during fire bans), and tap water that's untreated, so boil before drinking. There's no cellphone reception out here, adding to the away-from-it-all feel. Access is via an easy dirt road with some corrugations. A few DOC huts can be reached on foot if you fancy a longer wander. Well worth a visit for anyone who enjoys rural riverside camping.
