Top Hut

Campsite in the Otago region

Top Hut is a tidy 8-bunk backcountry hut in Hakatere Conservation Park's high country, with a warm fire and 4x4, bike or walking access.

Sitting in the high country, this tidy 8-bunk backcountry hut makes a good spot to pull up for the night. The setting's a pleasant one, and the wood fire keeps it nice and warm. There's a long drop toilet nearby too.

Top Hut gets consistently good reviews, whether you've come in by 4x4, bike or on foot. It's a popular one and can fill up with a few different groups even on a weeknight, so come prepared to share. The firewood stock tends to run low, so bring some along to top it up for the next party.

Access is via the surrounding 4x4 tracks. The West-side route can be done by loaded vehicles and takes the better part of a day. The East-side route is rougher and more of a challenge. Worth the trip in for the location alone.
