A former dairy farm turned tent campsite, set well off the grid beside the Waimana River deep in Te Urewera. It's a genuinely isolated spot, and there's a fair chance you'll have the place to yourself, so come self-sufficient and leave the screens at home.

The river is the drawcard here, good for swimming and fishing, with walks leading off into the forest all around. There's heaps of space to spread out on the non-powered sites, iron fire pits for a campfire when there's no fire ban, toilets, and water from the stream.

Getting out there is half the fun, with wild horses sometimes spotted along the way. At the end of the road there are a couple of spots to have a go at 4x4-ing on the river. A peaceful, scenic base if you're after somewhere properly remote to pitch up for the night.
