Te Pakau (Eight Acre) Campsite

Campsite in the Gisborne region

(3)

This former dairy farm now serves as a remote, spacious tent campsite in Te Urewera, in the Gisborne region, set beside the Waimana River. It's a genuinely isolated spot where you may well have the place to yourself, so come self-sufficient and don't expect phone or screen entertainment. The river is a highlight for swimming and fishing, and there are numerous walks leading into the spectacular surrounding forest. Facilities are simple but solid: non-powered sites with plenty of room to spread out, iron fire pits for campfires (except during fire bans), non-flush toilets, and water available from the stream. The drive out is part of the appeal, with wild horses sometimes seen along the way, and at the end of the road there are a couple of spots to 4x4 on the river. A peaceful, scenic base for anyone wanting to get well off the grid.
