Tawanui Campsite

Campsite in the Otago region

Tawanui Campsite is a peaceful riverside spot in Otago's Catlins, set in silver beech forest with tent sites, flush toilets and few sandflies.

(2)

Tucked away in the Catlins coastal area of southern Otago, Tawanui is an isolated campsite set in a clearing beside the river. It's a peaceful, spacious spot with plenty of room for tents, even when other campers are about.

Facilities are simple but welcoming: non-powered tent sites, flush toilets, and tap water (untreated, so boil before use). You can have a campfire here too, except during fire bans. The surrounding silver beech forest is the highlight, and the Catlins River Track makes for a rewarding day walk right from camp.

Being well off the beaten track, there's no cell reception, so it's a good place to switch off and enjoy the quiet. Sandflies tend to be fairly low key here, which is a welcome bonus in this part of the country. A great base for exploring the wider Catlins, with its waterfalls, coastline and native bush.
