Tapotupotu Campsite

Campsite in the Northland region

(7)

Tucked into the far north of Northland near Cape Reinga/Te Rerenga Wairua, Tapotupotu sits beside a sheltered lagoon that's great for swimming and kayaking, with the beach and coast close at hand. The cape itself is only about 5 minutes' drive away, or roughly 3 hours on foot via the walking track, making this a popular base for exploring the tip of the country. This is a DOC-style campsite with non-powered tent sites, non-flush toilets and cold showers (which stay tolerably warm through summer). Untreated tap water is available, so boil before drinking, and the site is wheelchair accessible with assistance. The setting can be exposed to wind, so it pays to check the forecast before you go, but the payoff is a beautiful, peaceful spot that quietens right down outside the peak summer holidays. Consistently well loved by those who stay.
