Tailings Hut sits in the vast tussock country of Oteake Conservation Park, Otago, where big skies and rolling high country serve up a Graham Sydney painting in every direction. Getting there is an adventure in itself: the 4WD track features numerous river crossings and steep rocky sections, with a generally moderate character in normal conditions. The river crossings are the route's defining feature, and levels can rise quickly with snowmelt, so a snorkel is worth having when water is higher than usual. The track is officially open to vehicles only between Labour weekend and 30 April, and may close if susceptible to damage. The hut itself is a much-loved blend of three buildings with different histories. The two bunkrooms were once single-man quarters used during construction of the Roxburgh Hydro Dam, while the larger 1930s building, built by farmers who held the earlier occupation licence, now serves as the kitchen. Facilities include heating, mattresses, toilets and stream water.
