Tucked into the historic Skippers area near Queenstown in the Wakatipu region, this campsite sits on a big, flat grassy terrace high above the canyon, with gorgeous views and scenic rocky natural features all around. Camp alongside heritage landmarks, including an old cemetery and school, with plenty of room to spread out. Facilities include long-drop and flush toilets and tap water (untreated, so boil before use). Mobile reception at the site is generally good. It's a great base for exploring on foot, by bike, on a tramp, or out hunting. Getting here is part of the adventure: access is via the narrow, mostly one-lane Skippers Road, with a clay hill section and a bridge crossing that takes a bit of nerve. A capable 4WD is recommended, and where the road is too tight to pass you may need to hug the hillside or pull into the ditch. The reward at the top is a peaceful, panoramic spot steeped in gold-mining history.
