Campsite in the Wellington region
Putangirua Pinnacles Campsite is a spacious streamside spot on the Wairarapa coast, base for the Pinnacles walk with Cook Strait views and summer sunsets.
On the Wairarapa coast in the Putangirua Pinnacles Scenic Reserve, this campsite sits beside the Putangirua Stream with views across Cook Strait and a pebbly beach just across the road. It's a spacious, consistently well-liked spot that serves as a quiet base for walkers, with plenty of room even though it gets busy over summer.
Facilities are simple: non-powered tent sites, flush toilets that visitors note are kept clean, and water from the stream. Dogs are allowed, but note that campfires are not permitted here.
The campsite sits right at the bottom of the Putangirua Pinnacles walk, best tackled in the morning and well worth the hike. You can also drive on to the seal colony near Cape Palliser lighthouse. Sunsets from the nearby beach are a real highlight in summer, making it a great spot to use as a base or simply as a quiet getaway.
