Purakaunui Bay Campsite

Campsite in the Otago region

(5)

A beautiful beachfront campsite in the Catlins coastal area of Otago, right on Purakaunui Bay. This large, peaceful site sits beside the beach with great coastal views and is fairly sheltered from the wind. There's plenty of room to spread out: you can camp alongside the campervans, up on the grassy hill, or drop down onto the beach and bear right to find more isolated spots where you can have the area largely to yourself. Beach access is easy and the road in isn't too bad either. Facilities are basic but include non-powered tent sites, non-flush long-drop toilets, fire pits for campfires (except during fire bans), and an untreated tap supply (boil before use). The site is wheelchair accessible with assistance. It's a great base for swimming, walks and diving. Bring sandfly protection, and it pays to book during peak times to secure a spot.
