Puketi Recreation Area Campsite

Campsite in the Northland region

Puketi Recreation Area Campsite is a quiet Northland tent base beside the kauri forest, with walking tracks on the doorstep, cold showers and fire pits.

(4)

Right on the eastern edge of the Puketi and Omahuta Forests, this is a quiet base for exploring kauri country. There's a good network of walking tracks straight off the doorstep, so it's a favourite with bushwalkers heading out for day or overnight tramps. Keep an eye and ear out for kiwi and short-tailed bats after dark.

About 20 non-powered tent sites, with cold showers, composting toilets, fire pits for campfires outside the prohibited fire season, a BBQ and untreated tap water you'll want to boil first. It's wheelchair accessible with assistance, and at around $16 a night it's good value.

There's no cellphone reception, so book ahead online before you arrive. You can pay cash at the iron ranger, but booking online is more reliable. A genuinely peaceful forest spot to pitch up for the night.
