Ohinepane Campsite

Campsite in the Manawatu-Whanganui region

(6)

Set on the banks of the Whanganui River in the Ohinepane Recreation Reserve, this is a Great Walk campsite in the ManawatuWhanganui region and one of four road access points to the Whanganui Journey. It's a spacious riverside spot with plenty of open ground to set up, plus good trees for slinging a hammock. Facilities are basic but well-kept: non-flush long-drop toilets, a cooking shelter, dishwashing, and an untreated tap water supply (boil before use). There's a boat launch handy for paddlers, and the site is wheelchair accessible with assistance. Look and listen for kererū, tūi and fantail, and listen out for brown kiwi calling at night. Payment is via an honesty box unless you're doing the Whanganui Journey, in which case check the DoC site for booking details. Bring bug spray, as sandflies and mosquitoes can be about. A consistently highly rated, relaxed riverside base.
