Tucked into the Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park inland from Gisborne, this campsite sits on grassy terraces beside Okahu Stream. It's a simple, low-key spot surrounded by native forest, with good picnicking and easy walking close to camp. The boundary stream is a pleasant feature and holds a few trout, so it's worth a look if you carry a rod. Several side tracks branch off nearby, giving you plenty to explore on foot if you fancy a wander into the bush. Facilities are basic: non-powered tent sites on the terraces, non-flush toilets, and water available from the stream. Campfires are allowed in the fire pit except during fire bans, so check the local restrictions before lighting up. It's an unhurried, back-country base for those wanting forest, fresh air and a bit of fishing well off the beaten track.
