Maunganui Bluff Reserve

Campsite in the Northland region

Maunganui Bluff Reserve is a basic dune campsite two-thirds up Ninety Mile Beach in Northland, with flat tent sites, cold showers and wild coastal scenery.

(3)

Set among the sand dunes about two-thirds of the way up Ninety Mile Beach in Northland, Maunganui Bluff Reserve is a simple but well-liked spot to pitch a tent. A few small access tracks lead up from the beach, where the sand can be soft underfoot but is manageable in a 4WD.

The camp offers flat tent sites with minimal facilities: flushable toilets, cold showers and untreated water, all for a small nightly fee of around $10. There's little shelter from the elements, so come prepared. It's a popular stop for Te Araroa Trail walkers, so expect company in season.

The setting is beautiful and wild, with horses and cats sometimes wandering through camp. At low tide you can walk or drive across to the island opposite, making it a handy and scenic base before pushing on toward Te Paki Stream further north.
