Campsite in the Canterbury region
Loch Katrine Campsite is a scenic lakeside DoC spot in Lake Sumner Forest Park, reached by an unmaintained 4x4 track, with fishing, walks and open camping.
Beside Loch Katrine in Lake Sumner Forest Park, a spacious grassy flat runs down to the water. There's plenty of room to spread out, with open spots by the lake or sheltered sites under trees, which helps when the wind gets up. That happens often enough that it's worth checking the forecast before you head in.
Good walking and mountain biking tracks loop around the lake and climb into the hills behind. Anglers can chase small trout from the edge, and if you're keen, a morning swim in the calm is the pick before the wind arrives. Dogs can roam free. There are cabins on the hill behind the settlement too, run by the Loch Katrine Association and bookable in advance.
Facilities are basic but well kept, with non-flush toilets in good nick and a tap. The water's untreated, so boil it first. Access is gravel road past Lake Taylor, then an unmaintained high-clearance or 4x4 track with potholes, fords and a few gates, roughly 5km at a crawl. Not one for caravans. Phone reception comes and goes. A quiet spot that rewards the effort of getting there.
