Kowhai Point Campsite sits within the Kowhai Point Scenic Reserve in Marlborough, tucked just off the highway on the banks of the Wairau River. It's a basic but pleasant spot surrounded by manuka, with a limited number of grassy, non-powered tent sites and a couple of non-flush toilets. Water can be drawn from the stream. The big drawcard is the river itself, with good access for fishing and swimming, and pleasant views across the water. Note the Wairau runs high and fast through winter, so take care near the banks. It makes a handy overnight stop for travellers passing through, easy to reach and close to the road. As a no-frills reserve campsite, facilities are minimal, so come self-sufficient and pack out what you bring in. Always check the live comment summary for the latest on access and any fees before you arrive.
