Right off the highway on the banks of the Wairau River, this little reserve sits among the manuka with a handful of grassy, non-powered tent sites. It's a basic setup, a couple of non-flush toilets and water you can draw from the stream, but a tidy and pleasant place to pitch up for the night.

The river is the main draw. There's good access for fishing and swimming, and nice views across the water. The Wairau runs high and fast through winter though, so take care near the banks.

Easy to reach and close to the road, it works well as an overnight stop for anyone passing through. Facilities are minimal, so come self-sufficient and pack out what you bring in. Access and fee arrangements have chopped and changed lately, so check the live comment summary before you turn up.
