On the western shore of Lake Hāwea, there's a big grassy camping area with good shade from mature mountain beech. The lake and the mountains behind it make for a fine backdrop, and it's about as peaceful as they come.

A relaxed base for walking round the lake, fishing or a swim, and there's a boat launch if you want to get out on the water. Facilities are good for a conservation site: non-powered tent sites, non-flush toilets, a shelter for cooking, washing-up areas, and tap water (untreated, so boil it first). Wheelchair accessible with assistance.

Being the last campsite before Wanaka, Kidds Bush gets popular and can fill up over long weekends and holidays. Flat tent spots are limited, so it pays to turn up early to grab a level pitch by the lake. Even when it's busy you'll usually find somewhere.
