Campsite in the Waikato region
Kakaho Campsite is a popular riverside camp in Pureora Forest Park, Waikato, with podocarp forest, swimming holes and a scenic rimu loop walk.
Tucked beside Kakaho Stream amid dense podocarp forest in Pureora Forest Park, this is a popular, well-loved riverside campsite in the Waikato. It sits roughly central to the North Island and not far from Taupo, with no cell service to disturb the peace.
There's plenty of room across several areas, so groups can spread out and keep some privacy, though the ground can be a little bumpy. Cool off in the stream's swimming holes, complete with tyre swings and rope ladders, just a couple of minutes' walk away. The hour-long Rimu Loop Track winds through thick native forest, climbing through a rimu grove to a stunning viewpoint and well worth the walk.
Facilities include toilets (long drops), water from the stream, BBQ and fire pits, and tent sites, with wheelchair access. Bring your own toilet paper. It makes a great base for exploring, hiking, hunting and the nearby 4x4 tracks, which range from easy to serious. Being centrally placed, expect the odd passing vehicle on the road alongside the camp.
