Campsite in the Otago region
Homestead Campsite in Otago's Oteake Conservation Park is a quiet, basic camp with an old hut, mountain views and crisp frosty nights at altitude.
Tucked into Oteake Conservation Park in Central Otago, the Homestead Campsite is a basic, isolated spot that makes an ideal base for mountain biking, hunting, fishing and tramping in the nearby St Bathans and Hawkdun Ranges. Access is via a gravel road with one shallow stream crossing, and the drive in is part of the appeal, with beautiful mountain views to greet you.
On site you'll find an old hut with a fireplace, kitchen bench and table and chairs (no beds), a cooking shelter, toilets and a tap with untreated but drinkable water. There's plenty of room, even for larger caravans, though the ground is uneven so finding a flat spot can take a little work — campers often throw a few stones under the tyres to level up. There's usually firewood about for a campfire.
You're at altitude here, so expect very cold nights and crisp frosty mornings even in summer, dropping to around freezing. Full cellphone reception is a bonus. Bring your own toilet paper and pack warmly, and you'll be hard pressed to beat this quiet, scenic camp.
