Set on the headland of Awaroa/Godley Head at the entrance to Lyttelton Harbour in Canterbury, this campsite occupies a fascinating WWII coastal defence battery site. You'll be camping among the historic gun emplacements and bunkers, with sweeping ocean views that are particularly stunning at sunrise and sunset.

A network of scenic walks loops around the head, making it an enjoyable activity for both day visits and overnight stays. Facilities include non-powered tent sites, flush toilets and treated tap water suitable for drinking, and the site is wheelchair accessible with assistance.

Be aware that the headland is very exposed with few natural windbreaks, so come prepared for the wind. You'll need to book a site through DOC, which provides the gate access code.
