Campsite in the Bay of Plenty region
East Cape Campsite is an open farm camp right on the beach near the lighthouse, with room to spread out, plenty of wind, and a $15 honesty box.
Fifteen kilometres east of the junction at Te Araroa, on an open rolling paddock that rises up beside the ocean. It's a large, exposed farm area with plenty of space to park up right on the beach, and you'll fall asleep to the sound of the waves.
The setting is open and windy, so bear that in mind, and there's a bit of a slope that tenters will want to watch. A long drop toilet is onsite, along with a small alcove housing an honesty box, around $15 per person. No power, so it suits self-contained campers, and no fires are allowed.
Don't be surprised if horses wander up close from the beach. Good stopover if you want to be near the East Cape lighthouse, just 5 km away. Back-country coastal camping at its best.
