Dunsdale Reserve is a free camp tucked away in Southland, set on a large, open grassy field with some sheltered spots under the trees if you'd rather not be fully in the open. It's nothing too flash but does the trick, and it's a spacious, well-liked spot with plenty of room to spread out. You'll find running water and toilets on site. Dogs are allowed, but there are no fires permitted here, so plan your cooking accordingly. Be aware there's no cell service, so let people know your plans before you arrive. And bring good bug spray — this is sandfly country, and they're out in force, so repellent is essential rather than optional. Note that the reserve is closed from the first week in May until 30 September each year, so it's a warmer-season destination. A handy, low-key base for exploring the Southland area.
