Coldwater Stream Campsite

Campsite in the Nelson region

Coldwater Stream Campsite is a remote Nelson backcountry spot on the Upper Wairau River, with basic facilities, good trout fishing and river access.

A handy stop along Rainbow Road, Cold Water Creek offers up some space to spend the night. It's nothing fancy, can be super cold - but you're surrounded by stunning hills.

Facilities are basic. Non-powered tent sites, non-flush toilets, and water drawn from the stream, so come self-sufficient. The ground is gravelly, so pack sturdy tent pegs and be ready to re-seat them if the wind gets up overnight.

Mozzies can be persistent here, and they've been known to get through even the heavy-duty repellent, so bring something to keep them out of the tent. Coldwater Stream is more of a stopover than a destination in itself, but the river access and the sense of being well out there make it a worthwhile pull-up. If it's not doing it for you, Tennyson or Island Gully are options further on.
