Campsite in the Wellington region
This picturesque campsite sits above the Tauherenikau River in the Tararua Forest Park, southwest of the Wairarapa, surrounded by regenerating bush. You can camp at the road end or walk roughly 150 m along the track to a grassy area amongst the trees. It's a quiet, well-sheltered spot with easy river access, a clean non-flush toilet, water from the stream, and fire pits you can use outside fire bans. The river holds a good swimming hole, perfect for cooling off in summer, and there's a cycle/walking bridge over the Tauherenikau nearby. Two walking tracks lead deeper into the forest park, including the Tauherenikau Gorge track. If you're drying out gear, camp on the south side to catch the early sun. Dogs are welcome on a leash, making it a handy base for an easy bush and river getaway.
