Campsite in the Coromandel region
Broken Hills Campsite is a spacious riverside bush camp in the Coromandel with warm swimming holes, scenic walks and no cell reception for a true off-grid getaway.
Broken Hills Campsite sits beside the Tairua River among native bush in the Broken Hills area of the Coromandel. It's a spacious DOC-style camp with plenty of room and tucked-away, secluded pockets to pitch a tent, so even when busy you can usually find your own quiet corner.
The river provides good swimming holes right by the camp, and the water can be surprisingly warm. The area is laced with scenic walks, including a notable 500-metre tunnel walk and the well-known Frog Rock along the way.
Facilities are basic but useful: non-powered tent sites, non-flush toilets, and a tap (the water is untreated, so boil before drinking). With no cell reception at all, it makes for a genuine off-grid weekend getaway, particularly peaceful outside peak season. Bring everything you need and plan to disconnect among the bush and river scenery.
