Beside the Tairua River, tucked into native bush, this spot has plenty of room and a scattering of secluded pockets to pitch a tent. Even when it's busy you can usually find your own quiet corner.

The river gives you good swimming holes right by the camp, and the water can be surprisingly warm. There are scenic walks all through the area too, including a 500-metre tunnel walk and the well-known Frog Rock on the way in.

Facilities are basic but handy: non-powered tent sites, non-flush toilets, and a tap. The water's untreated, so boil it before drinking. There's no cell reception at all, which makes it a proper off-grid weekend, and it's especially quiet outside peak season. Bring everything you need and plan to disconnect for a couple of days.
