Tucked into the bush near Ōpōtiki in the Gisborne region, Boulders Campsite sits beside the clear Te Waiti Stream, surrounded by nikau palms and tawa forest. It's a picturesque, highly rated spot popular for swimming and picnicking, with great swimming holes dotted along the river right next to camp. There's plenty of room for different setups, plus picnic tables, fire pits, a BBQ, a long-drop (non-flush) toilet and water available from the stream. The gravel road in is one-way and largely 2WD-friendly, with a couple of very shallow water crossings along the way. The final 20 metres of access track down into the site is steep and rough, so a 4WD is needed to get in and out — it's not suitable for cars. It's a peaceful, tucked-away bush camp best suited to smaller groups, and you can wander further down the river to find more secluded spots.
