Campsite in the Canterbury region
Balmoral Recreation Reserve Camping Ground is a spacious, low-cost grass campsite near Culverden in North Canterbury, rarely busy with basic facilities.
Set within the Balmoral Recreation Reserve in the Hurunui district of North Canterbury, near Culverden, this is a spacious and tidy campground with big grass fields and plenty of room to spread out. It rarely gets busy, making it a relaxed and low-cost spot to stay.
Facilities are basic. In summer there are non-powered sites, toilets and water taps. Over winter (from after Easter weekend until Labour Weekend in October) only long drop toilets are available with no running water, so bring your own water and toilet paper to be safe. Phone reception can be patchy, so don't rely on staying connected.
No bookings are required. Payments are made to a committee member on-site, or at the Caltex Garage (Mockett Motors) in Culverden if no committee members are around; cash or bank transfer is accepted, around $5 per person per night.
A long-running favourite with friendly people, well liked by visitors for its space, tidiness and value.
