Andrews Shelter Campsite

Campsite in the Canterbury region

Andrews Shelter Campsite is a no-frills Arthur's Pass beech-forest basecamp for trampers, with cooking shelter, stream water and toilets near the Casey Hut.

(1)

Tucked into Arthur's Pass National Park in Canterbury, Andrews Shelter is a popular starting point for trampers heading to the Casey Hut. The campsite sits in a classic high-country setting of beech forest and river valley, well placed to access the network of huts and tracks that make this part of the park a favourite with trampers and overland travellers.

Facilities are practical and no-frills: non-powered tent sites, a shelter for cooking, non-flush toilets, and water drawn from a nearby stream. It makes a handy basecamp for longer backcountry trips into the Waimakariri and Poulter catchments.

Be aware the surrounding area is part of a wasp research zone, so insect activity can be heavy in the warmer months — worth keeping in mind if you're sensitive to stings. Travellers wanting a more open camp with plenty of flat ground sometimes head to the nearby Haddon Shelter campsite instead, which some find closer and more comfortable.
