Campsite in the Canterbury region
Tucked into Arthur's Pass National Park in Canterbury, Andrews Shelter is a popular starting point for trampers heading to the Casey Hut. The campsite offers non-powered tent sites in a typical high-country beech-forest and river-valley setting, with a shelter for cooking, non-flush toilets, and water drawn from a nearby stream. It's a practical, no-frills basecamp for those setting out on longer backcountry trips into the Waimakariri and Poulter catchments. Note that the surrounding area is part of a wasp research zone, so insect activity can be heavy in the warmer months — worth keeping in mind if you're sensitive to stings. Travellers looking for a more open camp with plenty of flat ground sometimes head to the nearby Haddon Shelter campsite instead. Either way, you're well placed to access the network of huts and tracks that make this part of the national park a favourite with trampers and overland travellers alike.
